Google Maps will begin displaying fuel prices for UK forecourts starting on Thursday. BBC News reported that searching for fuel stations within the application will now show their locations along with current pricing. The change aims to help motorists find cheaper petrol and diesel. [1]
The price data is supplied through the government Fuel Finder scheme. According to BBC News, UK fuel stations are legally required to upload their price updates to the scheme within 30 minutes of changing them. [1]
The update comes as average diesel prices recently exceeded 2 pounds per litre for the first time, BBC News reported. RAC policy head Simon Williams described that level as a threshold no one wanted to cross. BBC News noted that while several specialized apps track local fuel prices, Google Maps is used by 77 percent of adults in Britain. [1]
Google Maps is a consumer mapping platform created by Google that offers street maps, real-time traffic updates, and route planning. As of 2020, more than one billion people globally used the application every month. [11]
