OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome to allow the chatbot to read open browser tabs, The Verge reported on 15 October 2026. Users with the extension installed can let ChatGPT view their browser tabs by tagging Chrome inside the ChatGPT web or desktop application. [1]
To demonstrate the functionality, OpenAI released a video showing a user asking ChatGPT to evaluate three open browser tabs featuring different sofas, according to The Verge. Unite.AI similarly reported that the feature brings computer use capabilities to Google Chrome through ChatGPT tab controls. [1][2]
The update follows the discontinuation of the ChatGPT Atlas browser, The Verge reported. ChatGPT is developed by OpenAI and reached more than 1.2 billion weekly active users by September 2026, up from over 800 million weekly active users in late 2025. [1][6]
The update comes alongside growing security concerns regarding browser extensions. TechRepublic reported on 14 October 2026 that malicious Google Chrome extensions had compromised 900,000 users, stealing chat data from AI services including ChatGPT and DeepSeek. [3]
