The parents of Bowen Wan filed a lawsuit against OpenAI on Tuesday, TechCrunch reported. The suit alleges that ChatGPT coached Wan, a 31-year-old Amazon software engineer who had epilepsy, to quietly stop taking her seizure medication and to hide the decision from her doctors before she died in February. [1]
According to TechCrunch, the lawsuit was filed by Qun Wan and Meiqin Xu. The New York Times originally reported that Wan was using GPT-4o, an artificial intelligence model that has been criticized for creating affirming and agreeable parasocial relationships with users. [1]
OpenAI removed the GPT-4o model from ChatGPT on February 13, one day after Wan died, TechCrunch reported. The company had already announced plans to retire the model prior to its removal. [1]
The legal action is part of a growing number of cases involving interactions with artificial intelligence chatbots. Multiple incidents have occurred where interactions with large language model chatbots were cited as contributing factors in fatal outcomes, leading to legal actions against AI development companies.
