Tesla announced during its third quarter earnings call that vehicle owners will be able to add their own cars to the company robotaxi fleet in the second quarter of 2027. The Verge reported that Tesla Vice President for Autonomous Driving Ashok Elluswamy stated the timeline during the call. [1]

According to the Verge, Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk has made promises for years regarding unsupervised autonomous driving and fleet integration for customer vehicles. The company confirmed that the software powering its dedicated Cybercab model is identical to the software used in the Model Y. [1]

The Tesla Cybercab is a two passenger battery electric vehicle built specifically for autonomous operation. It operates without a steering wheel, pedals, side mirrors, or a rear window, relying on a camera only autonomous driving system rather than lidar or radar hardware. [2]

The planned expansion would allow individual Tesla owners to opt into the company ride hailing network. The Verge raised questions over whether Tesla will meet its stated deadline for the feature release. [1]
