Jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles are now able to download and run Windows games directly from a user's Steam library without streaming from a computer, TechPowerUp reported on October 24. The capability comes through an alpha launcher program called Playden for PS5, created by developer leolobato. The software adapts an existing macOS version of the tool to work on modified consoles. [1]
According to TechPowerUp, the Playden software lets console users log in to their Steam account by scanning a QR code to browse and install titles. Steam is a digital distribution platform for computer games developed by Valve, which launched in September 2003. [1][4]
The project relies on software modifications, often called softmods. Softmods use software to bypass hardware or firmware restrictions and install custom software on video game consoles. [3]
This development follows previous progress in the PlayStation 5 modding scene. As FTMQ Tech reported earlier, developer Sword updated the PS5SX2 emulator on October 10 to allow jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles to read and play physical PlayStation 2 discs directly. [5]
