Developer Sword has updated the PS5SX2 emulator to allow jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles to play physical PlayStation 2 game discs. TechPowerUp, Tom's Hardware, Kotaku, VideoCardz, and Insider Gaming all reported on the new feature, which allows the current-generation Sony console to run original media from the older platform. [1][2][3][4][5]
The feature arrived as a beta build in version 2.01 on October 10, according to TechPowerUp. TechPowerUp reported that the release followed a video demonstration posted on X on October 9, which showed a PlayStation 2 disc being inserted into a PlayStation 5 console. Tom's Hardware noted that the PS5SX2 software also supports 4K upscaling for the emulated games. [1][2]
An emulator is software or hardware that allows one computer system to behave like another system, enabling the host device to run software designed for the guest system. The original PlayStation 2 was part of the sixth generation of video game consoles, competing against Microsoft's original Xbox console that released in North America in November 2001. [6][7]
TechPowerUp reported that PS5SX2 is a native PlayStation 5 port of the PCSX2 PlayStation 2 emulator. Tom's Hardware and VideoCardz both noted that the independent software modification delivers physical disc compatibility for original PlayStation 2 games that Sony itself never officially added to the PlayStation 5 platform.
