Major banking and retail firms have moved to block Meta's personal artificial intelligence agent, Muse, from accessing their platforms. CNBC and Digital Trends reported that Amazon has blocked the AI shopping agent from operating on its site. CNBC and The Tech Buzz also reported that JPMorgan Chase has taken steps to block the tool. [1][2][3][5]

CNBC reported that Charles Schwab, Neiman Marcus, and Kohl's have also moved to block personal agents like Meta Muse. Consumers have started using these agents to look for better savings rates, search for retail deals, and cancel subscriptions. Meanwhile, retail experts warned that technology that removes customer friction usually succeeds over time. [1]

Other major retailers are taking a different approach to the technology. Digital Trends reported that Walmart and Shopify are embracing Meta's shopping agent instead of restricting it, which could alter how consumers discover and buy products online. [2]

Meta Platforms announced Muse on September 8, 2026. Meta describes it as a personal artificial intelligence agent designed to complete long-running tasks on behalf of a user, rather than functioning as a basic chatbot that answers single queries. It was released in the United States across iOS, Android, and web platforms. [6]

The conflict points to growing uncertainty about the future landscape of online commerce as virtual storefronts adjust to automated software agents or take action to block them entirely. [1]
