DeepSeek released an updated artificial intelligence model over the weekend, Bloomberg Tech reported on 17 October 2026. The Chinese company claims the new version operates faster and uses fewer resources than previous releases. [1]

Startup Fortune reported that the specific release is named the V4.1-Flash-1017 model. The update connects the model more closely to the company's internal software framework. [3]

According to Bloomberg Tech, the launch increases competition against American rivals Anthropic PBC and OpenAI. DeepSeek is also competing against Chinese domestic artificial intelligence developers including Moonshot Kimi and Z.ai. [1]

DeepSeek develops a series of large language models that began operating in November 2023. An earlier version known as DeepSeek-R1 was released on 20 January 2025 and became the most downloaded free application on the United States iOS App Store by 27 January 2025. [4]
