Developers at British video game studio Ninja Theory have reported job losses as staff members share public updates regarding their employment status. TechPowerUp reported that employees at the Cambridge-based developer behind the Hellblade series have posted on LinkedIn stating they were laid off or that their jobs are currently at risk. PC Gamer Hardware and PC Gamer also reported on job cuts and concerns affecting the broader gaming industry. [1][2][3]
According to TechPowerUp, journalist Chris Kerr first spotted public posts from affected employees. The staff members reporting job cuts include a technical director, a gameplay programmer, technical artists, and sound designers. TechPowerUp noted that these reports come as parent company Xbox moves toward closing the Hellblade developer. [2]
In addition to the developments at Ninja Theory, PC Gamer Hardware reported that developers at video game studio The Coalition are concerned about future job security. Although no official layoffs have been announced for The Coalition, some staff members working on Gears of War: E-Day fear they could face job cuts even if their upcoming title proves successful. [1]
Ninja Theory is based in Cambridge, England, and is known for creating titles such as Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and DmC: Devil May Cry. The studio achieved significant commercial and critical recognition with the release of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice in 2017, an independently funded game that won multiple BAFTA Awards. [4][6]
